Bio/Description

JUAN C. FERRE (M.D., Ph.D., CUNY Graduate Center). Ferre is a Medical Doctor and sociologist whose research focuses on political economy, health, and social policy in Latin America. His current book project, The promise of Universalism Deferred: Social Policy in 21st Century Latin America explores transformations in welfare policy across the continent paying special attention to the social forces and historical conditions that allowed for a significant expansion of benefits in many countries. It also emphasizes the importance of market pressures and other factors in perpetuating or even widening inequities in social welfare, blocking progress toward universalism. Ferre’s other areas of interest include medical sociology, labor, and Marxist theory. His work has appeared in Latin American Perspectives, International Journal of Health Services, International Journal of Social Welfare, North American Congress of the Americas (NACLA), and New Politics, among others.
