James Loxton ‘06 (Ph.D., Harvard University) is a senior lecturer in comparative politics at the University of Sydney. His research focuses on authoritarian regimes, democratization, and political parties. He is the author of Conservative Party-Building in Latin America: Authoritarian Inheritance and Counterrevolutionary Struggle (Oxford University Press, 2021), co-editor of Life after Dictatorship: Authoritarian Successor Parties Worldwide (Cambridge University Press, 2018), and co-editor of Challenges of Party-Building in Latin America (Cambridge University Press, 2016). While at Princeton, Loxton will be working on a new research project on "hereditary democracy," or the phenomenon whereby children, spouses, and other close family members of politicians are themselves elected to high office. An alumnus of Princeton, he is thrilled to be returning to his alma mater for the spring 2023 semester.
