In memory of Sergio Chejfec

April 4, 2022

With great sorrow, PLAS reports the recent death of Argentine writer Sergio Chejfec. He was the author of the novels Lenta biografía (1990), El aire (1992), Los planetas (1999) (translated into English as The Planets), Baroni, un viaje (2007) (translated into English as Baroni: A Journey), and Teoría del ascensor (2016), among many others, as well as the essay collections Sobre Giannuzzi (2010) and Últimas noticias de la escritura (2015). Chejfec was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, the International Dublin Literary Award, and the Second National Literary Award (Argentina). In 2017, Chejfec spoke at PLAS as part of the Latin American Writer Series, and he contributed a recent article to País Portátil: Contemporary Venezuelan Literature and Arts, a special issue of the journal Review: Literature and Arts of the Americas. We at PLAS have lost a dear friend, and Latin American literature has lost one of its most compelling, interesting, and accomplished writers.
