Summer Research Funding
These grants (up to $5,000) are designed to support research-related travel for work in, or work focusing on, Latin America and the Caribbean. Proposals for research to be undertaken in summer 2017 should be submitted to PLAS by Monday, April 3, 2017: they should include a concise research statement, a detailed budget, schedule of travel (departure and return), and an indication of any additional project support. Preference will be given to requests by tenure-track Assistant Professors. Grants are for summer travel: they can be used to cover transportation, accommodations, and other travel-related expenses. Funds cannot be used to hire research assistants. Grantees will be notified by Friday, May 5, 2017. No Advance Payment can be processed. Requests for reimbursement must be made within 60 days of your return from a trip. After 60 days, you must send an explanation of lateness and a request for review and approval to the Dean of the Faculty or Vice President for Finance. If the late reimbursement is approved, it must be reported by the University to the IRS as taxable income.
The Program should be credited in any resulting publication(s).
Conference Travel Grants
The Program will reimburse associated faculty members for travel to one conference per academic year (July 1–June 30) to present on a Latin American topic. For 2016-17, the expenses are capped at $1200 per conference. No prior application is necessary; reimbursement requests may be submitted at any time during the academic year. Any reimbursement request should go through Concur. Out-of-pocket expenses need to be substantiated in Concur within 60 days of the transaction date, and Travel & Expense credit card transactions need to be substantiated within 30 days of the transaction date. When submitting a Concur report please ask your department approver to 'Approve and Forward' the expense report to firstname.lastname@example.org.
PLAS entertains proposals to subsidize the translation of faculty publications into Spanish or Portuguese, and the translation of Spanish or Portuguese publications into English (July 1–June 30). To apply, please send a brief request, including publication details, to email@example.com. PLAS should be credited in the resulting re-publication.
PLAS entertains proposals from faculty who are teaching sponsored or cross-listed courses, to cover travel expenses and honoraria for in-class guest speakers (two per semester maximum per faculty member). These funds (up to $1500) can also be used to cover field trips to exhibitions, plays, concerts, or similar cultural events in the New York-Philadelphia corridor. To apply, please send a brief description of the proposed activity, together with a budget, to firstname.lastname@example.org
PLAS entertains individual or joint proposals to support public programming (e.g., seminars, workshops, conferences), including course-related public events. Proposals should include a brief statement of purpose (including a note explaining how the event relates to a course, if applicable), a list of invitees, a detailed budget, and a list of co-sponsors. Ideally, proposals should be submitted one semester in advance so that the event can be included in the PLAS calendar. Grantees are expected to handle travel and accommodation through their home departments; PLAS will assist in event publicity. Funds are available up to $1500.
